512BBi Major Service II

The second day on the Boxer major service, I took the belt and camshaft
covers off the engine and put them in the wash tank for degreasing and
cleaning.

Before I removed the timing belts, I turned the engine over to #1 TDC,
which is marked PM1/6 on 12 cylinder Ferrari engines. You can just make
out the mark on the cam that lines up with the first bearing cap. All
four cams should line up to these marks when the engine is at #1TDC.

With the belts and tensioners out, it was time to replace the tensioner
bearings. I could feel a little roughness in one of the old bearings so
I guess this service was in good timing. (No pun intended.)

The water pump was next. The front bearing comes out with a little heat
on the aluminum housing. The rear bearing is held in with a snap ring.
Since we didn't have the bearing for the water pump in stock, I had to
complete this rebuild another day, so I spent the rest of the day
washing
parts, and getting them ready for paint.
Just a reminder, I'm looking for a
new Vintage Ferrari Project. If you have, or know of a restoration
project, please let me know. It would be great to restore another car
on this website! My E-mail.
