Thanks Matt and Kerry,

I will have to take a closer look at the worm gear. It may be worn in the middle, judging from your comments. I would love to have a copy of the article. You have my email address I'm sure. Thanks so much.

Matt,

Thank you for going through the process step by step. It explains things very well. I think your American car steering box is pretty like the ZF.

Now, let me ask you one thing about the worm. Independent of the rest of the components, does the worm have a center point of its own?

John Tarr, Thanks for your comment, but let me ask the question in a different way... For the center position, i.e., the wheels pointing straight, the pin should be in the mid point of the worm gear. Does the worm gear need to be oriented in a certain position while the pin is at mid point? The ques...

Eddie,

Redline Lead Substitute tends to seal the valves against their seats and it tends to improve compression. I use it regularly in my old cars.

AKB,

Thank you. The old boxes are also ZF, but they look a little different from yours. I'm sure the workings are the same. Looks like I'll have to take mine apart again, as I don't think the allignment are right.

Steering Box Overhaul

Has anyone rebuilt a 50's or 60's steering box? Does the worm gear have a center position? If so, is it marked? If not how does one find it?

In other words, when the wheels are pointing straight forward, does the worm gear need to be is a certain position?

Thanks.

Yale, Use the "diamond" rubber Ferrari and Maserati used in the 50's in their race cars' interiors and sometimes in the trunks of the road cars. It is not that expensive. Restoration Supply Co in Reno, Nevada caries it so do a number of other upholstery suppliers. Here is a picture. http://www.ferra...

Paul,

Yes, the numbers are small and look to be fit by the manufacturer.

Joel,

When the problem arises (with the electric pump off) look at the glass filter bowl to see if there is an air bubble in it. There shouldn't be any. If there is air bubble, that would mean that the throughput of the pump is inadequate. The stroke of the the pump may be too short.

Leo,

There is backing material especially for carpets the upholsterers use it to stiffen an otherwise flimsy carpet.

Luke,

I can't wait to see your car. That silver is my favorite all time color. It looks at home on every old Ferrari.

David Booth --- what color have you chosen? Hopefully silver, blue or something similar...

In contrast to the Lusso, my '59 250 GT has 1-6 on one cap and 7-12 on the other. The numbers are in firing order of the bank and they look pretty official. The caps are old original bakelite and each number has a clear veneer of celluloid over it for protection from solvent fluids. I don't know whi...

Paul,

My Lusso is pretty original and it has 1-6 on both caps. The numbers are in the spinning order of the rotor, not the firing order.

It is seems absurd. What does it tell us? Can anyone explain?

Enzo,

Sorry, I didn't get your question until Sunday evening. The Silverado concours was on Mare Island today. It is usually in early June.
