Re: Dwell Setting

John: Thanks for the kind comments about my recent post. The 3 leaf springs are what all the 3 lobe distributors originally came with. The 4 leaf springs are what came in the 6 lobe US distributors for the US spec emmission control Daytonas, etc. It is possible that Bill Young at GT Car parts may st...

Re: Dwell Setting

Measuring the point gaps is just a mechanical method for setting an electrical adjustment. What is important is the degrees of dwell, as that determines the amount of coil saturation. The longer the time the coil has to recharge, the stronger the spark. Dwell is what is important, not the specific p...

Re: Daytona Shop Manual, et al

Look at the last postings on the thread about setting carburetors. Tom Wilson has posted all my articles (including Daytonas) on his web site.

Re: Carb Synching (the sequal)

Tom: I do not know exactly "who owns" the articles, as Gerald and I were good friends and we worked together on many things over the years. I personally have no problem with you copying the articles and getting them out to those that could benefit from the information. The times have changed to wher...

Re: Carb Synching (the sequal)

I have been enjoying all the carburetor talk, but it seems time to let everybody know that I did a five part series of Tech Tips for the Ferrari Market Letter in 1982 and 1983 that covers all of this. It is all laid out there. It covers three and six carbs, DCL, DCZ, DCF, DCS, DFI, DCN, etc. It was ...

Re: By pass oil filter connections 330GT 2+2

The inlet to the filter from the chaincase always goes to the "outside" fitting, and the outlet from the filter always comes from the "center" fitting and returns the oil to the pan.

Re: GTE Safety Belts

The original belts for those cars were made by the Irvin Parachute Company. They have ONLY TWO attachment points. In effect they are a shoulder belt only with no lap belt. I still have the original belts from my GTB. The buckles are metal-to-metal, but do not"click" together, they just kind of overl...

Re: bolts and nuts

250s were 14mm hex on 8mm bolts and studs, except where the factory used special nuts due to clearance problems. This also runs well up through 275s and 330s. In fact probably all of those cars used the 14mm hex, though I am sure some "expert" will poiint out where that is not the case. I cannot rec...

Re: water pump leakage

John: Scott Taylor. a great Ferrari mechanic who is no longer with us, told me years ago "If you go looking for trouble, you will probably find it". As tempting as it may seem to want to rebuild your pump, I would have second thoughts especially if it is working fine. You can always take it off and ...

Re: water pump leakage

As you discovered, it is all about the spring tension. We always save the used old style "heavy spring" seals and install the old heavier spring in the new seal. You can also convert the pump seal design to the later Daytona/Boxer design with some machine work. This gives a more reliable sealing sys...

Re: Best spark plug for 330 gtc

BP6ES is great for regular street and spirited road usage. You can use the platinum or iridium plugs, but in my experience, for Ferraris of this era, the regular plugs work well.

Re: Borrani Finish

I guess I have to answer the question since I was singled out! In my experience, the original wheels were very nicely finished. The polish was pretty shiny. Probably not as good as the restoration shops do today, but quite nice. As we all know, a brillant shine on these wheels never lasts a long tim...

Re: Pertronix kit to replace points in S85

I have not used a Pertronix system in a Ferrari, but have in various other cars and used solid core wires with no problems. One comment on converting a Daytona to aftermarket electronic ignition units. My experience has been that Daytonas do not have sufficient metal panels in the engine compartment...

Re: valve adjustment screws

As to painting the inside of the cam and chain covers, the factory originally painted them with a greenish-yellow phosphate primer. With age, it turns a brownish-yellow, and that is what you should see on engines with some miles on them. To my knowledge, phosphate primers are no longer available in ...

Re: valve adjustment screws

As to roller out-of-roundness, I have found it normal to see .001-.002". I used to many years ago, when I was young and full of energy, carefully set the valve clearance with the rollers in the "tightest" position. Now, I am lazy and just pick a spot and set the clearances. As to cam wear, I have pe...
