Re: cam timing off?

Hi Tom I gather that this May be a 330 engine and having done some homework I have learned that up to the 365 engine the cam timing is carried out using normal rocker clearance, so having already set yours you should now be ready to time the cams. Please check this information, because i have also s...

Re: cam timing off?

Hi Tom Which engine do you have? The marks on the cam shafts seem only to be a guide for initial engine assembly and exact cam timing should be carried out as you have described, by rotating the engine to discover exactly when the valves open (or close). I find it easier to feel when the rollers loc...

Re: Warped carb base

Hi Timo, I loved your response and far from having difficulty with English you have exactly articulated what so many of us strive for when you say "I'm always trying to do any/all work to the best of my ability and continually trying to learn ways of doing things better." I have a friend who says th...

Re: Warped carb base

Hi all Gosh I have been surprised by some other replies on this, Tom Yang site. I thought most of us had dirt under our nails and actually drove the cars. A most common failing with 40 to 50 year old Weber carburettors is that the bodies warp through a mixture of heat and being over tightened and th...

Re: Warped carb base

Hi Tom I would advise against trying to straighten the castings as you are likely to do more harm than good. The bases are simple to machine flat, either with a milling machine or just by sanding. Even with a relatively large gap the material is soft and will easily sand down on some good quality pa...

Re: Engine idle problem

Hi John Just before you strip those carburettors it is worth checking that your throttle cable is moving freely. It is quite common for the cable to stick in its sheath, especially if you have neglected a bit of lubrication there. Also in a forty something year old car there is a surprising amount o...

Re: Valve Cover Removal

I assume you have made sure that all the distributor nuts are loose, and the chain cover acorn nuts are off. As Tom suggests it might sometimes be necessary to try to get a fine blade in the joint, but probably only if too much RTV has been used. It is worth checking how flat the mating surface of t...

Re: Dropped valve

Hi Tom I don't like to correct you, but I think you'll find the cam timing is adjustable in increments of 4 degrees, which gives a plus or minus accuracy of 2 degrees. The adjustment is obtained by rotating the sprockets on the end of the cams in multiples of seven chain links. There are 5 bolts fix...

Re: Summer activities

I'm surprised that your attempt to kick start a new thread hasn't attracted more attention, because summer is definately the time for us to be out and about in our cars. My wife and I generally try to use our 365 GTC for holidays and in the past few years we have managed several thousands of miles o...

Re: Annual maintenance

Hi John. I was meaning bush number "9", which the cam follower runs on. It just goes to show that a picture is worth etc.... I have just read your thread again and now understand your comment about the early engines. I guess that when things get too sloppy it wouldn't be difficult to carry out a mod...

Re: Annual maintenance

You are spot on with the tolerances for end float or axial clearance of the rocker arms. This is a high wear area and often neglected, so it is not uncommon to see 0.15mm wear limit exceeded. Also the shim washers seem to be unobtainable! I make my own, by turning from bronze bar, Colphos 90, which ...

Re: Annual maintenance

I usually slacken the pinch bolt and give the housing a smart tap to make sure the plunger is free. I would normally check the chain tension annually, depending on mileage, but anyhow it should be checked before making any adjustment to cam timing. My sequence with the cam covers off for a service w...

Re: Cam question

Hi Tom I don't think we should let you get away with hiding "trade secrets"! Cam timing is crucial for best performance, although it is surprising how well these 12 cylinder engines will run at widely different cam settings. Checking and adjusting the cam timing is fairly straight forward and should...

Re: Removal of 330 GTC front cover

Hi Bob, Sorry to hear about your problem. I rebuilt the engine of my 365 GTC last year and had quite a lot of difficulty removing the front chain case cover as well. which is probably not surprising when you think how large the area of surface contact is. No doubt you will already be ahead of me, bu...

Re: Distributor Oil Leak

The oil seal in the base of the distributor drive prevents oil from getting up into the body of the distributor, but are you talking about oil seepage between the flange of the distributor base and the back face of the cylinder head? If so there is just an O ring seal which does tend to compress and...
