Did anybody see how engine blocks are made on The Science Channel's How it's Made? Very similar process. Although a robot (quickly) adds 17 sand castings to the main piece. Very quickly. Another distinction is they fill the mold from the bottom on this one saying that the aluminum would be compromised if it mixed with oxygen. Outstanding episode of my all-time-favorite show.

Alas, it truely does not appear to be something even the most determined and resource-rich DIY'er could replicate.
