42 MM knockoff

Post by Michael Bayer »

I have one of my knockoffs that got scuffed badly and needs to go to Cork Adams for cosmetic surgery, does anyone have an old spare I can rent for the 90+ days so that will take, enabling me to continue to drive the car? Michael Bayer #9727 (AKA Wheeless in Washington)

Were you pretending to be Ben-Hur again?

Try to contact Francois S. through Tom Y., he should be able to set you up. Otherwise, theres always E-bay or Tom S.

I have a spare pair if you need them. they are the US style(octagon not 3 eared) and are actually incorrect for Ferrari so I use them as a spare.

let me know and I will send them to you

octagon or eared?

Post by steve lapp »

Your discussion brings up a question I have been meanign to sort out. My 65 330, which was originally owned in Italy has the octagon knock-offs. The wheels match the car by type though. I understood that octagons were required in Europe at one point as a safety issue? Has anyone got the low down on where and why Octagon knock-offs appeared? Definitely not as sexy as the eared type, but if original in some cars, why?

cheers

My understanding of the octagon knockoffs is exactly that of a safety issue in Italy in the 60's. I was living in Geneva at the time (1966) and asked a Jaguar owner why his car was missing the leaper cat in front and why he did not have wire wheels with the knockoffs. He mentioned that he had lived in Italy and it was illegal to have knockoffs in Italy at the time and that the leaper jaguar cat on the front hood had to be removed if he wanted register the car in Italy. I still don't understand the safety issue of the knockoff. I figure if someone is making contact with a wheel at that point they are in trouble no matter what.

Why not buy a new one for less than a restoration. Call Ted Waibel in Colorado at 303 456-5544. Ted is a Borrani distributor.

Type 42 is std Rudge-Whitworth 42mm from beginning of last century of a hub insert to a wooden wheel and refers to the maximum diameter of bearing for the hub but not necessarily fitted to that hub. every one in uk knows that. :D

Post by Rbtrader »

Anyone know why some of the octangonal wheel nuts have a "hand" on them and others have a "prancing horse"? Thanks in advance.
