That "before" photo shot of the cap shows a cap that
never had ANY tiny speck of black paint or any residue
of black paint on it. The photo of the cap in the blue
box has at least some evidence of a coating during its
lifetime. Paint doesn't wear off that perfectly as noted
in the "before" photo.

Why did you change the two ear nut in to three ear nut on the airfilterhousing?
after doing so much research?
At the foto in yearbook 1960 we can see the late Prince Berhard of the Netherlands hanging
in his new delivered GTE motorbay ,with TWO ears on top.
In Parker Hall Katalog (kilimanjaro) is said that the three wings nuts started with PF coupe serie 2 around #1551GT
who is right who is wrong ?

Org. three ears came out # 1913GT, a car I had for many years.( has now replica nuts on it from Hall.)

Factory yearbook shows Prince Bernhard inspecting 1895GT that served as a factory promotion/test drive car late in 1960. I think PF Coupes came with two eared nuts til the end of production. Very early picture of 1973GT clearly shows them on the filter housing. I think many owners have replaced these as the three ear nuts look so nice!

Early GTEs also had two eared nuts. I think the change occurred sometime in 21xx-22xx. Don't have much idea when exactly, but all pre-production cars I've seen pics of had two eared nuts.

just an educated guess on the air cleaner nuts, I know Parker Hall has the cutoff listed at 15xx but look in the owners manual where 2339 has the 3 ears. 2169 came with nothing so I decided to have both on hand, I and the owner prefer the way the three ears look. Not everything is set in stone

Several cars in 22xx-23xx have three eared nuts, so that's pretty solid. Some of the pics showing them are pretty early too.

I have no material to comment claim of 15xx, but suspect a mistake. It would help to know where that part was originally sourced from; made particularly for this purpose or standard stuff available in Italian hardware stores at the time.
