Spinners

Post by Steve Meltzer »

The knock off spinners that I have on my 330 GTC are "straight", but I've seen spinners that are the usual 3 spoke jobs, but have a bit of a curve in them. Which ones go with which model or does it matter? thanx steve

I have heard that it is always straight for the 14" wheels which is the GTC's and GTB's. I know when I got my Mag wheels (for a 1964 330GT), I said to Francois that I should get the straight ear'd knock offs. He said no, the curved ones from the wire wheels were correct. And as it turns out, I do have photos of both on the 15" 330GT mag wheels from period photos so I guess once again, proving the Ferrari adage, there are no rules. Yale

Curved-ear knock-offs were made by Borrani and were paired with Borrani wire wheels. The straight-ear knock-offs were made by Campagnolo (I stand corrected if wrong on the manufacture, but I believe this to be accurate) and were paired with the square-hole magnesium wheels also made by Campagnolo. No doubt there were exceptions; I would speculate that on more than one occasion, the Factory installed the nearest set to hand. However, the rule of thumb is a good one to use for 275 and 330 GTCwith 14" wheels (and less so for 330GT?). Chris

Hi Steve,

I have heard it (true or not) that the Borrani nuts do not provide for proper tightening on the 14-inch cast wheels. It may be a safety concern worth investigating.

GTC spinners

Post by Greg Brendel »

I have the straight ones on my GTC and the judge at Cavallino said they are supposed to be the curved ones. I would like to buy the curved ones if anybody has them available at a decent price.

The key word is "decent price". Jimmy

Steve Fritz commenteted at an FCA judges meeting about two years ago that either straight or rounded KO's came with the wires or Campagnallo wheels when Chinetti got them from the factorty, so go from there......

Mike Dunn dinged me 2 points at the National last year for having straight-eared knock-offs on my 10-hole alloys. Had I known this was an issue for him, I could have marched him around to my trunk where I had an original Ferrari press photo of straight-eared knock-offs on the alloy wheels.
Judges, even really experienced ones whose opinion I value, can make mistakes. Bayer is right, stick w/ what is shown in your manual.

Bryan, you are right that judges make mistakes. That one's mistake was even looking at the knock-offs. As you stated, the advertising photos show straight spinners on 365 GT 2+2s but if you look on page 6 of 107 of your Usage, Maintenance and Service Manual, you will see the angled spinners. At the same time, the engine and chassis parts book shows straight spinners on Tavola 38. Ferrari apparently cared less about what they built the cars with than their customers do 40 years later.
