Water Pump 400i

Post by fest »

I am facing the task of rebuilding the Water Pump
on my 400i
(yet another 'little' thing the DPO neglected to mention)

my questions are these:

How difficult is it to replace the INNER seal (oil seal) 108060
will I be able to pry it out of there?
(this with the pump on engine, and engine in car)

should I plan on replacing the SPACER 100431
that both seals ride on?
(I could wait and see if it is worn, but that means even longer down time)

input from those that have rebuilt these pumps
(especially F101C owners)
VASTLY appreciated

400i water pump

Post by Dr. Ian Levy »

Hello
If the water pump is the same as on my 365 GTC4 & is in unit with the oil pump it is necessary to remove the engine from the car & then the pump from the engine. I have recently done this work succesfully but it is a big job for a little seal. I will be happy to provide any help I can

yes, the H20 Pump and Oil Pump
are at the bottom, chain driven, etc.

according to the service manual
the pump can be rebuilt
with the pump still on the engine
and the engine in the car

I am going to give that a shot
I still wold appreciate any tips

like the spacer for example

Hello Fest
You are right & it does say thet in the manual
I thiought you needed to rebuild both oil & water pumps
It was not easy to replace the seals with the pump on the bench so I wish you luck if you do it in the car
The seal came in two parts from Ferrari UK but I am not sure about a spacer With the pump off the car I replaced all the seals, bushes & bearings so I suppose I did a different job
Regards & good luck

Were you able to rebuild the water pump on the engine in the car?

400 water pumps are easy to rebuild in chassis. The oil seal is very easy to replace and I doubt that you will have any trouble doing the job, just make sure of the order when things come apart.

I seriously reccomend having a local machine shop make you a sleeve out of stainless steel as the original is probably tired and it needs to be very crisp in order to seal properly.

1978 400a waterpump rebuild

Post by brettski »

i recently noticed a great deal of oil in my coolant while i was checking my fluids. it was suggested to me by those who know a great deal more than myself that it was likely my waterpump and not my headgasket. although i became a pro at changing the w/pump on my old 308 this will be my first try on the 400. i have my parts manual but was hoping someone here ( fest / stephanm ) could advise what parts i should order.
thanks in advance,
brett

With Apologies

Post by brettski »

Sorry gentlemen. i didn't mean to cut anyone out of the loop. Stephen and i talked breifly about a cool glass 308 he is selling for a customer of his and than he was kind enough to explain which parts i should order when doing the w/pump on my 400. these include a couple of w/pump seals, an oil/coolant seal ( this i believe is the one causing my cuurrent problem ), an o-ring, an acorn nut , and a lock tab. Brian at Rutlands also recomended the 'casing' gasket and a small replacement hose. That's it !
