Gas Smell

Post by GTH1 »

I have a 1962 250 GTE which has a gas smell (in the cabin) under certain circumstances. When I fill up the tank it smells or when the tank is at or greater than half-full and I go through corners I get a gas smell. I have not removed the tank but no lines seem to be broken. No visible wetness anywhere. The vent also seems to look ok. Any suggestions?

Something is sloshing around when you're nearly full. Have you looked at the filler hose in the trunk? There is a panel that covers the filler neck to the tank on the right side of the car. The soft hose may be leaking. There is also a drain hose that drains away excess gas out of the area below the filler cap. Check to see if the small diameter hose is connected to the bottom of the rear trunk well. Smells in the trunk can get into the passenger compartment through holes at the bottom of the rear windshield.

Good luck!

Also check the tank float cover, to see if it is loose, or the screws not tight. It is under the rear tray under the rear window.
