Should I get an Optima or vintage battery?

Post by Greg Brendel »

Time for a new battery, wondering what you guys use. I am tempted to put an Optima in but a bit concerned about the look. I heard the 250 originally came with a Bosch battery. Fashion or function....?

I just put in an Optima - the hell with the look, I'm tired of having my battery go flat between drives. It was that or put a "battery minder" on it and have a plug dangling all the time.

But you have to remember, I'm a driver, not a shiner...

I use an Interstate truck battery group 27F and slapped a Magneti Marelli sticker from Parker Hall on it. Looks great! Between drives I disconnect the battery via a quick disconnect. I have not had any problems for over 2 years.

vintage look

I was going to suggest the same thing:
last time I was at Sears
(waiting for tire service or some such thing)
I checked out their battery selection
and noticed that their commercial/heavy truck line batteries
had a distinctly 'vintage' look to them
e.g. screw on caps, etc
I filed that ifo for future reference...

from experience in the classic car realm
talking with those that did purchase expensive 'vintage' batteries
they indicated they got 'vintage' results
i.e. poor performance and durability

in fact, the commercial 'truck' battery
is the replacement battery of choice
among the classic cars of the 6V persuasion

Interstate...

I've had the same experience as JimB ... Interstate, with cut-off ... works great! Never a dead battery.
