Hi Guys:

I am trying to figure out the best way to move the steering column out of the way so that I can remove the heat shield on the drivers side.

It appears that the lower pinch bolt associated with the u-joint inside the car might be the ticket.

Thanks in advance

Hi Mark,

If you remove the bolts holding the u-joint together (mine were allans), you can remove the u-joint inside the engine compartment without having to disturb anything under the dash. Just be careful not to loose any of those needle bearings!

This would also be a great time to repack the u-joint with fresh grease.

Tom

Hi Mark,
I think Tom's set up is much earlier than yours, so give this a try . I have been able on several occasions to remove the heat shields without messing with the steering shaft on both Euro and US versions so it can be done. but if yours is just to tight you can undo the bolt at the steering box side of the U-joint and undo the one under the dash closest to the steering wheel and slip the whole thing out in a matter of a few minutes. The joints will be very tight and take a bit of force to seperate so use caution not to destroy anything else in the process. the best trick is to remove the carriage bolt and then insert a chisel or large scewdriver in the gap to release some of the tension on the splines.
