One of these days I am going to buy a fire stattion, too. I will convert it to a cozy car club. Kind of like the Candy Store, but for guys (and gals) with cars in sub $200K category. Speed TV, a nice library (I already have Road and Track from 1959 to 2003A), auto mechanix classes, space to park the classics that do not fit in your garage...
I am not entirely sure how this would make money, but...old fire stattions are so cool !

thx, luke

I had my eye on an old carriage house down the block from me in NYC before the housing market boom. I had ideas of converting the four story building into apartments with the ground floor, and second floor as my living space. Even as a unrenovated building, it sold for $950K! :-(

I still can't pass a fire house or carriage house without dreaming of the possibilities! Hopefully, if this weekend home works out, I'll one day be able to build a workshop that will make a great place to gather!

turn key

Post by fest »

one of the beauties of an old fire house
is that it includes living quarters
along with the cavernous vehicle bays
the ones I am looking at
are basically turn-key
with bathrooms, kitchens, etc

this is opposed to the typical 'commercial' property
which requires considerable remodeling
to be habitable
and usually is not in such a good area to live
fire stations, on the other hand
are typically in a residential area
(#2 is in crumby neigborhood, # 6 is nicer)

#2 has the original tongue and groove
clear vertical grain Fir interior paneling
and still has it's vintage 60's interior

# 6 was just remodeled in the 90's
very clean (but sterile) interior
(real nice big kitchen)
was recenty remodeled to provide
'seperate but equal'
living quarters for the female firemen
(as part of the 'politically correct' affirmative action 90's BS)
remodled just a few years before they closed it, actually
(our tax dollars hard at work again)
this seprerate section of living quarters
can readily be converted to an apartment
that can be rented out, if one so desires

TONS of parking, too

If you buy one of these properties, does the city give you a special dispensation so that you can run red lights and a siren on your car?

It is a shame that you didn't get Firehouse number two. That neighborhood is pretty cool. In school I had a project to design a community center in that neighborhood. I think that I even still have scale models of that neighborhood somewhere.

The traffic in front of Firehouse number six would throw me off, but then again I guess that it would drown out any machinery noise from auto repair.

Good luck, I wish I that I could buy an old Firehouse like these.

#2 was purchased by a local 'businesswoman'
who will most likely remodel
and destroy the vintage appearance

and yet another mint original
will bite the dust
in pursuit of the almighty dollar
