Door latch screws GTE

Post by T308 »

Anyone know of a source for the door (and hood) latch screws for a GTE? Can't seem to find one.

Thanks

Have you tried Newco?

They're tricky to find because they have the over sized head with a smaller shaft. (That somehow sounds dirty.)

I've seen three types of screws, Flat, phillips, and allen. The allens show up on later cars like 330s. I usually find flat screws on GTEs and cars up to 275s. It looks like the ones in the picture are phillips?

If they're not available, I've been told shops have gotten flat bevel head machine screws with the correct head size and machined down the shaft and cut new threads in the proper diameter... and you wonder why it costs so much to restore a car!

Yes, they're phillips. I've seen later cars with slotted, so perhaps these are replacements.

I do just that, I bought 100 stainless steel 1/4" or 5/16" taper head slotted bolts from McMaster car than I turn down and thread the shafts. It really doesn't take that long and they look almost perfect when done. I am not sure when the Phillips ones come in but those are a little harder because the Phillips slots are much smaller on new hardware that the old stuff.

I am sure there are other ways to do it and if I had a full time cnc guy working for me these are the kinds of jobs that would be great to shelf until people need them.

Another thing you can keep an eye out for on ebay, for the philips ones, are latches from 60s pininfarina-bodied fiats. Specifically, 1200/1500 cabriolets, 124 spiders, and dinos. Same parts. Still, they tend to get chewed up or rusty, so newly made ones would be ideal, of course. If anyone is in a position to make them, I might be interested in some as well.

those door latches shown in the first picture is not a Ferrari part I think.
Ferrari use the more nicer/ better ??? latches with chrome "nose" from 1958 till over 1964.
the plastic ones can be found on later biuld Alfa's and lancia's
those screw are available at every body shop in Italy with every inmagenary slot confugiration but in zinc ox.

As always some pics.
But I can perfectly live with those plastic ones.

Hi Cornelis,

I've seen the plastic spring tab version on mid 60s Ferraris, and the chrome/steel version on earlier cars.

I'm thinking the switchover to plastic might be 1962 or earlier. Here's 3157 which had plastic in all three.

Didn't you car have an engine fire? Perhaps the plastic hood release was consumed and replaced with a metal version?
