Does anyone have a suggestion on how to check the gearbox oil level in a GTE for those of us without a lift?
I've considered trying to build a ramp, putting it on jack stands, and digging a trench in the front yard but decided to ask for advice before going to any extremes.
Thanks
Ron

Re: Checking the oil level in a GTE gearbox
Hi Ron,
The good news is Ferrari made an access cover for the filler plug! Unsnap the leather transmission cover on the left side and look for a square cover. Unscrew the plate and behind it will be a large nut. Take that off and the oil should be just below the plug.

Re: Checking the oil level in a GTE gearbox
Since Ron has a OD, there is another fill plug for the overdrive. I forget if there is an access plate for that one. Don't forget 30 weight Non Detergent ENGINE OIL for the overdrive, the gear box gets regular gear oil, but I prefer Red Line MT90 however because it's a synthetic, and helps the engagement of the slow synchros when it's cold.

I'll have to check it again tomorrow, but I had the access cover off this weekend and couldn't get to the gearbox fill plug; the fill plug for the overdrive can be accessed though. I was planning on using 90 wt in the gearbox and 30 in the overdrive. I'll let you know what I find.
Thank you.

Re: Checking the oil level in a GTE gearbox
Hi Ron,
OK, I looked. There are two covers. The smaller cover towards the front of the transmission is the filler for the gear oil, and the large raised cover is for the overdrive and solenoid access. You'll need a big socket for the transmission fill plug.

Hi Ron,
What series is your car.
Series II cars OD runs off the same sump.

Re: Checking the oil level in a GTE gearbox
Tom,
I found the access cover right where you said it should be, but covered by a layer of insulation. When I first looked I had removed the cover for the overdrive, but didn't see any sign of another panel.
William, I have a series III, sn 4151.
Thanks for the assistance.
