Yeah, it's a shame. That particular 400i was in my database from a couple of years ago when it was healthy. While it does seem fixable, the fact that the car can't be put into gear suggests that there could be a more serious drivetrain problem that is the reason for the total and salvage title. Probably more than a "simple linkage problem".
Oh well, expect to see another parts car on the market. Or maybe a quickie dickie-do fix-up and a trip through the title cleaning states before coming back on the market!
