Thanks.

Hi Ron,

It should take about half a day but realistically a day as long as there aren't any issues. WIth a near 50 year old car and many hands working on these cars, you never know what you might find. Here's what's involved:
drain radiator
remove accessory belt
remove water pipe and associated hoses
unbolt and remove top idle pulley assembly
remove nuts to WP
remove outer housing
remove impeller keeping shaft in place. (if the shaft comes out, the timing chain drops and you'll have to pull the engine to fix!)
carefully remove wp seal
clean the area up and install new seal
clean out wp housing, paint.
Check the face of the impeller and replace backing plate if surface it scored

reinstall everything

It's involved and I'm sure there are a couple steps that I've forgotten to add, but that's basically it.

There can be issues when taking things apart, but let's be positive!

Thanks for the reply. As long as I've got the water pump open, should the impeller and bearing be replaced? If so, any ball park idea what the parts would cost?

Hi Ron,

The impeller doesn't need be replaced if it's in good shape, but the steel face that's riveted to the back of the impeller needs to be inspected and possibly replaced. You'll have to peen a new rivet in place of the one that gets knocked out.

Taking the WP housing out to change the front bearing can be tricky, but can be done. It all depends how far you want to go.
Here's a picture of all the pieces:

I'd have to go back to old invoices to check on prices.

Great information guys. Sadly I'll be needing it sooner than expected. Image

Broken Piston top. Sorry to see that. Any theories as to it's cause?

We're still wondering where the piece from the front cap went...

That could have done it, but it would have been quite the journey for that to have moved down to the #10 hole.

To me the failure looks to be brittle vs. a strike that caused it, but with the dent it's hard to say what the origin was.

Btw, does anyone know the part number for the left bank front cap? Clearly I need one and it's curiously missing from the parts books. Better yet, does anyone have one?

I'm not sure those pieces are related. If the piece fell into the timing case, how would it have made it to the intake side to get into a combustion chamber?

The piece to the cap probably broke off when someone forced it into place instead on installing it with the timing chain cap loose as you're supposed to.

interesting stuff.
