Thanks Scott. Yes, the push cables used in the Ferraris are solid, although the new 1.5mm braided stainless steel bicycle cables are stiff enough and can do the job. The stiffness creates a problem with spooling around the winder pulley. But, to close the loop on this discussion, I go something special from China (ebay) that is the ticket.
