tail lights

Which fuse controls the tail lights? Is it the same on that controls the parking, reverse, engine, panel and fog?

No. The stop lights are on the lowest fuse on the left block (when facing the fuse panel). It also controls the electic fuel pump and rear window rear defroster.

If you hear the electric fuel pump when turned on, or see the ammeter take a hard left if you turn on the defroster, the fuse is fine.

Note, this is for a 16 fuse panel, not the older 12 fuse one.

Thanks Kerry. I have the Series 2 fuse setup with 16 fuses. Are the stop lights and the tail lights the same? Both tail lights (these are the ones that come on at night when the headlights are on) are out, but the brake lights work after a fashion, meaning they come on but when you the brake pedal goes all the way down then the brake lights go out. I replaced the hydraulic switch, but that didn't help.

From what I've heard this is how the brake lights work. It's so the folks behind you can ponder you intentions and then at the last moment have to slam on their brakes do as not to rear end you. I think this was a practical joke, among the many, that Ferrari built into their fine cars. I've heard that there is a Volkswagen beetle relay(?) that helps this situation. My name is Yale and I stand behind this message.

It is a twin filament bulb for both the lights.
My first thought is to replace the bulbs, or test them with an ohm meter to see if both filaments are good.
Also check that there is a good ground as funny things can happen with twin filament bulbs and a bad ground. The sockets for those bulbs can get loose, particularly if the housing was ever taken apart to be re-chromed. The whole housing is grounded through the studs and nuts holding the housing to the body, not the best situation. Star lock washers under the nuts will help with grounding as they will cut through paint better.

I think that a volt meter checking the voltage at the wires at the junction point in the trunk would determine if the problem is related to the bulbs, sockets or housings or a problem up front with the fuses or switches. I've attached a picture of that junction.

Since both tail lights are out and the brake lights are flaky, I think a loose ground or connection is the likely culprit.

I forgot to mention it will blow thefuse when the ignition is off. Didn't have time today to mess with it.
