Tool Bag. Again.

Post by Grigio330GT »

I know this topic comes up every few years, but even after reading thru the various postings and websites, I am not clear on if any one of the 3 or 4 different bags from various suppliers are more "correct" than the other . I am not sure it even really matters, since I intend only to create a tool set with modern "mostly" correct tools (ie - new Beta55 etc). In any case, I have found 4 suppliers: http://www.ferraripartsexchange.com/tools.htm; http://www.lyletannerferrariparts.com/f ... l_kit.html; PARKER HALL (kILAMNJARO) and http://reoriginals.com/toolbagnewmanufa ... u0133.aspx. Matt at re-originals said he is NOT sure of his bag is correct for 60's V12 cars - it is supposed to be correct for a Daytona. They are made in Italy. I can't tell if a mid-generation 330GT (7895) should have a brown, black, pebbly or smooth bags. Or, does it not even really matter? Any thoughts?

TIA for any/all help

I believe Ferrai Parts Exchange and Lyle Tanner are one and the same. As nice as Matt is betting that Re-Originals has the correct item is not normally a bet you'd want to make. Parker Hall knows what he's doing and he has the best accent. Course making spot on Ferari tool bags has been the bain of many a parts supplier. Le me just mention he whose name shouldn't be mentioned in polite company, T S, and say after a good deal of bloviat

Brown, pebbled, vinyl, on all sides. No white areas. Mine has separate jack and tool bags.

Greetings.. I bought one from Richard Ward-the guy whose fingers actually make them-and it has been an exact match to 3 of 5 I have compared it to. He also has no middle man pricing. My62Helms.Yahoo.com I think he now has black and brown, smooth and pebble.

The "Twin" bags were designed for the 275 series of cars, which, in their initial form had a large single gas tank in the middle of the trunk. They had recesses on each side of the tank. A large single tool bag was too big to fit in either recess, so the factory went to the "twin" bag design. As such, a "general rule" would be for cars after the advent of 275's (about 6500 chassis number) to have "twin" bags.

However, after the long nose GTB's (about 7800 chassi number) appeared with the twin fuel tanks, the factory went back to the large single bag and you will find those in many Four Cams, however, 365 GT 2+2's continued to use "twin"bags.

The best rule to follow is that there was NO rules. The factory put out bids to various sources for bags as the supply ran low, and each supplier or low bidder had variances from the initial design, so bags vary throughout the years and only follow GENERAL similiarities.

Clear as mud, isn't it!!

Well said!

This also includes the various tools therein. I am sure that Luigi would be sent to the local hardware store to buy screwdrivers if the supply was short and a car was due for delivery that day.

I forgot to mention that there is an advantage of having having two bags.
They can be nicely nestled about the spare tire without intruding into the open trunk space.
Btu maybe that can be done with the larger one-bag setup, but perhaps not so easily.

Cars in the 8000-11000 range will have both single or twin bags without much sense of which is which. Many GTC's had twin bags (9671 did)

Thank you for all the excellent replies. Given that my car is relatively early, I will go with a single bag. There seems to be no sure indication of black or brown, but I am tending towards black. I have not been able to contact parker hall yet, but will still do so. I did get in contact with Rich Ward, and he sent me some pics of his bag. I have ordered Beta55 wrenches and wood-handled screw drives. Now need to start on the hub puller, grease gun etc.....

Thank you all again

Hi Dave,

I believe the hardest thing to find these days is the light blue jack. It's not an easy thing to remanufacture but I think they were also made for Lancias. There are slight detail differences that I'll try to photograph the next time I have one out of a tool roll to photograph.

Good luck!

Here's an interesting note on tool rolls to put things in perspective. The FCA judges can confirm this, but total points deductions on book and tools are 4 points if you have none. So, about 2 points can be deducted for a missing tool roll. There are dozens on pieces in a tool roll, so when a judge inspects your roll at an FCA event, how many points deductions will there be if one item is missing? 1/4 point deductions can add up, but if you have some kind of a tool roll, it can't be a complete 2 point deduction, unless the judge wants to be vicious. So when you're about to hit "buy it now," for $1000 bucks for that elusive jack, think about how much it's worth for that's 1/4 point!

Hi Tom

Concourse is not my objective by a long shot - my car has a long way to go before it is "judgeable". For a jack, I actually have an old Mercedes jack that looks close and fits well. I might even repaint it blue ;-).

I did stumble upon a company in England that sells an entire reproduction toolkit for £1495.00.

I was one of the fortunate ones who's GTE came with a pretty complete tool kit. I think at this point I am only missing the pliars, the braided grease gun hose and the spare fan belt. Of course, my lead hammer shows a lot of use, but I like it that way. If anybody needs photos of the individual tools, I got 'em...
