Coil Red Paint

Post by John Vardanian »

What is the right paint brand/code for the earlier coils with the cylindrical resistors, please? Thanks.

John: It is a fairly dark Burgundy. Parker Hall may sell this. Slightly darker than the standard "Square Resistor" coils.

Now a days it seams to be more and more important this kind of detailing.
Due to" PB concours expert" who have seen the light.
instead of good MAINTANANCE and DRIVING.
thats sad IMO.
last time will show colours of this kind of "issues"
I cannot see diff.color on newer or older Marellis coils myself
why schould they change? during the years ?
they probably ordered 10.000kg of paint at each time.
hère NOS pics.

I used Parker's paint on my coils below, but I haven't compared them side-by-side with the original so I don't really know how close the color is:

Thanks everyone. I had the darker color on mine and I think I like that better than the brighter red of the later, square resistor type. I'll see what Parker has. Thanks again.

BTW, how I started this thread... my PF coupe's coils were a nice shade of darker red, but they were looking shabby.. I had a whole can of the color you see on the resistors here, so I painted the coils this color, they look too shiny and weird. Don't like the look.

John,

You may be able to take the sheen off using 2000 "wet or dry" sandpaper. Sometimes hitting it with 2000 will just dull the high spots so it doesn't look even, so it's best to start with 1000, then 1500, then 2000. If it's rattle can paint, then you have to be very careful because it is very easy to sand all the way through the paint even with these fine grades.

Maybe it's just the photo, but the color looks very different in addition to the amount of sheen. Is that definitely the same paint?

Hi Peter, thanks for the tip re sanding.
The colors are different on purpose, because I understood that on these later models, the resistors were supposed to be a different, darker shade of red than the coils.

I agree with Parker Hall's opinion (in catalog) that the coils and resistors were probably painted with the same paint at the Marelli, factory but that heat darkened the resistors. It just doesn't make sense that Marelli would buy two different colors.

Also, my recollection of 1960's oil-based industrial paints is that they were more likely to be fairly glossy, never as dull as modern "satin" finishes. Semi gloss would probably be closer.

I never thought of the heat being a factor, but now it makes sense. You can get a good burn if you touch the resistor.

When did Ferrari changed to golden Coils?

I´m not sure, if for a 1962 250 it is correct to have red or golden Coils. At the moment, i have golden installed.

This thread is giving me bobina envy, anyone know where I can get a working set BZR -201A with brackets and resistors suitable for 1967/1968 330 cars? old paint and patina acceptable, I suppose gold or red would be ok too, they just have to work.

Could someone please tell me the color code of the correct satin red for the 60's distributors? I don't believe Parker carries this anymore. Thanks for your help.
