Leaf Spring Liners

Post by enio45 »

I recently acquired a roll of the leaf spring liner for my 58 Ellena to restore the rear leaf springs.

My question is about the notches that have to be put into the liners.....with the spring put of the car there is a significant arch to the spring, so cutting the notch on the side to accommodate the straps, i suspect when the spring is fully extended, the cutouts will not be aligned on each leaf.

I looked at several restored and orig cars with the springs in the car the notch seems to be very aligned when installed with the suspension and leaf fully loaded (or extended) .

My originals are long gone, so i don't have a templates to use.

Also - is the liner suppose to extend past the end of each leaf when extended?

Appreciate the advise as this is my first set that I'm rebuilding.

Hi Ed, the Series 1 PF coupe and the Elena cars share the same short (pinion) nose rear axle casting and general suspension layout. The first picture is is from a 10##GT Series 1 PF coupe. Also no particular attention was given to neatness when it came to the question of how far the liners should stick out. Do note that the early cars do not have the rubber blocks at the "U" brackets. This came later around 1960 and on. The second picture is a Lusso suspension, which is also original and this one shows the rubber blocks, four per side, and the liners are placed neater. Hope this helps.

Ed, I think you´re car came without these liners

the coincident occur ,I did ask Kerry the same question 2 month ago.

I did bought a factory n.o.s set of leave springs this year for a project of mine PF S1 1958.

these came without blocks and liners.

The first pic John send has disk brakes and is probebly not a PF S1 car.

the linings came IMO with the S2 PF coupe.

Hi Cornelis, for the record, the first picture in my posting is in fact from a Series 1 PF Coupe car. It had disk brake conversion at some point in Europe.

The street cars had the plastic spring liners, the comp cars did not. The comp cars used "polished" leaves without any liners, and a coating of grease on the leaves.

I thought Jim was going to show it at Concorso. I had half a mind not to bring it Saturday, but heard he was going to bring that car.
