40DCZ6 Carb Kits

Does anyone have any suggestions as to who may have carb kits available for the 40DCZ6 carbs in North America? I see that they are available through www.superformance.com.uk in the United Kingdom as well as through www.okp.de in Germany, however I have been unable to source them in the US. I have tried MPI in Wisconsin (who is currently out of stock) and have even gone directly to some of the US carb kit manufacturer's (such as Walker Products in California) to no avail.

Any suggestions?

I just spoke with Mary at Pierce and she was FANTASTIC to deal with. They had both re-gasket kits as well as full re-build kits on the shelf and ready to go. She processed the order straight away and they are on the way for next week!

Hi John,

The two biggest problems with these carbs are worn throttle shafts and warped base plates. These problem areas introduce vacuum leaks into the carburetor and affect tuning. Check the base plate for flatness with a straight edge, and see if the butterfly plates show any play. Really bad wear in any of these two areas should be considered before installing all theses new parts to find no difference in the rebuild!

Thanks Tom ... I'll let you know what we find when we get them torn down! Based on the mileage on the car however, I'm not expecting any nasty surprises with the throttle shafts and if the base plates are warped from the fire, I should be able to mill them down marginally if they are warped. I'll let you know...

John,

I know its your car and carburetors to do what you wish, but "milling" the carburetor bases to get them flat is not necessaily a smart way to correct them, especially when the warpage is usually distributed further into the body of the carb and therefor affecting the throttle bores (out-of-round), throttle plate shaft (mis)alignment, etc...

Perhpas the best(?) way to correct all affetcted areas is to have specialists like Pierce Manifolds to bend them back to square.
To achive this it takes special fixtures/jigs, several proper temperature heat cycles in an oven and experienced understanding.
And at Pierce they can address other related problem often associated with this, like if the plates have worn "scrapes" or grooves to sides of the bores, they can hone them slightly and make new "oversize" plates if needed or eve bore them big enough and make/install sleeves into them, etc...

With above issues and available services in mind, it should make sense that just "milling" or sanding the base bottoms flat may not only not be necessarily enough to get to engine running correctly but also that once any material is removed by milling or sanding, it's going to be even more difficult (and costly) to get them straightened later and should perhaps be considered inappropriate for rare vintage Ferrari carburetors.

Tim,

Thank you for the advice regarding 'milling' the bases. Once I get them off and determine the specific condition of the bases ... if it is determined that they are in need of some attention in that area, I will definitely consult a specialist like Pierce prior to undertaking the removal of metal.

I definitely appreciate the advice as I would never have thought to go back to Pierce ... I had assumed that they were simply a parts depot specializing in carburation.

I would echo what Timo said. Mike Pierce really knows these carbs and has a flow machine to see exactly what, if anything needs to be done. He did all three of my DCZ6 Webers from my GTC (and carbs from Daytonas as well) and tuning the car thereafter was vastly easier. Having a nice steady idle was nice and then the vacuum pulled by each bore/barrel could be adjusted. steve

I hate to pile on but I too elected to use Pierce to correct my warped 40 DFI bases. Although I have a sophisticated machine shop at my disposal, I decided it was not worth the risk making a fatal mistake on a rare/expensive carburetor. Pierce ended up straightening my bases and boring out the throats that were out of round and worn in. The carbs were restored cosmetically too, ready to bolt down and tune. It was relatively expensive but I figure that I do so much work on my car myself that I could afford to splurge and hire an expert once in a while.

Thanks guys, I'll talk to Mary again at Pierce and have them do the job. I appreciate all the input and especially the first hand referrals of Pierce based on personal experiences.

I think you'll be glad you did. Mike is a really nice and knowledgeable guy who will evaluate your carbs and give you the facts. Repairs on these ain't cheap (as noted) nor fast, but on the other hand, these carbs are very, very valuable...ain't like a throw away Holley. s
