CAF # 1 Red Paste

Post by fest »

What is the "CAF # 1 'Red' Paste"
referred to in the Service Manual
to Seal Gaskets and O-Rings
in critical areas?

what is modern US equivalent?

Service Manual also mentions
"Hylomar Paste"

Again, what to use?

Tom-
input from 'the Man' most appreciated:
what does Francois recommend?

CAF # 1 Red Paste

Hello Fest
Hylomar is a non-setting blue gasket compound that can be used on metal to metal joints or as a gasket dressing. It keeps the gasket absolutely in place during assembly & in England we would use the expression that "it sticks like sh*t to a blanket"
Check out
http://www.4pcorporation.com/Hylomar.asp
I used it sparingly & carefully all over my engine & it is oil & water tight at present.
I don't know what t Francois uses but I can not recommend this material highly enough

Dear Ian
thanks for the input!

this is what I came up with:

Apparently the 'C' in CAF stands for Copper
(that is what gives it it's High Temp capability)
and that is what imparts the 'reddish' tint

Permatex offers such a product
Namely: Ultra Copper High-Temp RTV Silicone Gasket Maker
P/N 81878 (#101BR on Tube)
http://www.permatex.com/products/prodid ... m_no=81878

as for 'Hylomar'
Permatex offers this product, as well:
Hylomar HPF Gasket Dressing and Flange Sealant
P/N 25249
http://www.permatex.com/products/prodid ... m_no=25249

I should be able to find these locally
and I will let you know how they work out!

Hi Fest,

Francois uses the Wurth gasket sealer, but I'm sure any of the other sealers will work fine.
