Finish of External water pipes on a 250 GTE?

Post by chris »

Dear All,

what finish were the External water pipes on a 250 GTE? I have seen nickel, silver cad and painted gloss black. What would be right for a Series 3?

Thanks a lot

Hi Chris,

The water pipe running from the back of the engine under the left side exhaust headers should be nickel. The one that houses the thermostat and connects to the radiator should be black wrinkle finish.

If you're going to remove the water pipe that goes under the header (good luck, I think the exhaust has to come off!) remember to install a clip that secures the front of the pipe to the first stud on the exhaust. This takes the stress off that pipe that extends all the way to the back of the engine.

Tom, thanks for the fast reply. What finish is the small pipe directly at the water pump, also nickel? See photo.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes. Nickel. Stainless would be better, but not original. There was some talk years ago about the steel being the sacrificial anode instead of the aluminum of the block, but switching to stainless will cause something else to corrode. Never use plain water on these cars, and make sure the antifreeze is fresh.

Thanks, Tom. I will have all tubes nickel plated and
then will spray the upper wrinkle.

Cheers

I have had a handshake with every little part of that little f##ker and I am still learning something new about it. This hoop was in the box of parts when I got my car about 20 years ago and I had no idea where it went until tonight. It looked like it belonged to the car so I kept it. Thanks for mentioning it, Tom.

Hi John,

I've been working on Ferraris for about 20 years, and learned a lot from my Mentor Francois' guidance. He's shown me a ton of things that I try to impart on the Internet because if we don't pass on this knowledge, all will be lost!...even if it's a simple little clip that about 100 people give a crap about!

Hi All,

I am looking for a front water pipe for a 250 Gte S3. The one that connects to the thermostat. Any ideas where to get one.

Thanks

Hi Christopher,

I believe several suppliers have these, some of them made in original steel, while others have made them in stainless steel. The biggest thing to check it the heater hose orientation. I think GTO has them.

Hi Tom,

I checked this already ans spoke to Bern from Gto. No luck. I started building my own and ordered the thermostat neck from Gto.

Thanks

Build one myself. Not the prettiest but tested to 3 bar. Will have it nickel plated and then paint it wrinkle.

Thanks for all advice on how to get one.
