Air filter assembly
Air filter assembly
Any ideas on how to get these dents out of my air filter assembly? They’re in a tough spot on one of the intakes. Looks like it was somehow crushed at some point. Also any thoughts on powder coating vs spray paint after bead blasting?

Re: Air filter assembly
I would not be so quick to bead blast an intake housing of any type, the media gets forced into every corner, fold and lap joint, and vibrations can bring it out. Yes I understand everything will be painted, theoretically sealing in anything that could get loose, but be very careful.
Maybe use walnut shells or plastic media to lessen the risk? I wire brushed and hand sanded mine to be ultra safe.
Years ago I bought an unfinished project car (not Ferrari) that the seller had powder coated the filter housing so I was naturally on guard, and sure enough, when I started to poke around in the corners of this sheet metal housing, guess what I found?... good thing the engine had not been run yet.
Same goes for anything that comes in contact with the oil system, I have another experience to be shared another time.

Re: Air filter assembly
One way to get the dents out that I have used on our 330 was to have the "paintless dent" removal guy tap them out. It took him about an hour to get them all smoothed out, and the cost was reasonable too. I also agree, no media blasting on anything near the intakes.,
Re: Air filter assembly
Both good points. I’ve had some success with sand paper. Just time consuming. I’ll give the dent removal guy a call. I’ll just leave out the Ferrari detail

Re: Air filter assembly
Once upon a time I had a Lancia Aurelia B24 with a frozen Flaminia Motor. I bought a correct motor that Max Balchowsy (Old Yaller) had installed in a Lotus Super Seven (a rather nice job, too, but really the wrong choice). Although it was a supposedly fresh motor with almost no time on it, I decided to drop the pan before installation, just because.
What I found was both blasting garnet and glass beads, pretty much everywhere. All the bearings were wiped out. The oil passage plugs hadn't been drilled out, so they were all contaminated. Had to also drill out the crank plugs, the head passages, etc., even had to pull the large bronze bush the fuel pump push-rod runs in. Had to re-rebuild the whole d**n thing.
Better safe than sorry.

Re: Air filter assembly
I wasn’t able to get the dents out but I’m pretty happy with the final result.
