Dash restoration

Post by Pmo75 »

Hi all,

I'm planning to have the dash of my Series II restored. As you can see in the photos the board was remounted many years ago with incorrect placement of screws. The wood is cracked too. I;m planning to have the under dash vinyl redone while keeping the original vinyl over the dashboard.

Could anyone send me pics of the piece of trim that hides screws on the left and right panels of the dashboard?
Any information on correct placement of screws, nature of screws and how they are hidden would be great.

Any feedback on dash restoration as well !
I have info on the finish, but I guess that might have depended on the wood. I believe my car has teak.

Since I got the car I changed the radio for a Blaupunkt frankfurt and bought a missing chrome ring for one of the three air vents + adequate AC buttons.
I got rid of a lof to the pitting in the chrome generally.

Thanks !

Pierre

Beautiful car. Teak is very durable wood, which is why they use it on boats where it is heavily exposed to the elements (sun and salt water). All teak gets dried out over time so that it looks horrible, but it usually will go back to looking like new with proper cleaning and application of oil. I would definitely clean and apply teak oil to your entire dash first before you make any determination on how much (or if) restoration is needed. Watco teak oil, available at Home Depot, is very good.

Unfortunately, I don't believe there was any cover over the left side where the screws are (maybe Kerry knows of some variations -- you never know). Not sure what the screws are used for, but assuming you can remove them, you might be able to fill the holes to shallow depth and them apply circles of thick teak veneer (thick so you can sand flush) -- then sand flush and darken them with oil.

Hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they used any stain or poly on the teak dash, so you might find that oiled new teak matches very well. Of course the easy test on color match is just to get some new teak veneer, apply oil, and see how it compares. You could also try some light staining before oil to match if it wasn't perfect.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of your dash needed nothing after oiling, but the screw holes will need to be dealt with.

Thanks Peter.
Will definitely start with some oiling...
I revived the leather over the past months and its incredible how well it came back. Natural components can have a second life!

Hello Pierre,

I have also a series 2 330 in very original condition. I can help you with pics for your dash area. In my opinion the wood varneer is mahagoni no teak. Teak is much darker. The verneer originally is laquered. If you oil it you can not paint it any more. Tomorrow I will take pics.

I believe it is teak. Hopefully more people will chime in to confirm or correct that assertion.

Here my pics from the dashboard . Left side around the switches there is a plastic cover . Around the steering column it is a fiberglass form piece covered with vynil like the right side of the dash.
