330 SII fuel tank

Post by Wrigs2019 »

Does removing the fuel tank on a series 2 330 require a lift or is it something I can do with the car on Jack stands? Looking for a project to tackle during the quarantine.

The car has to be very high in the air as the tank is quite tall. I have done it on jack stands, but it's not easy. You also have to move or remove some of the rear exhaust as it is under the tank.

The other thing is when you are removing the banjo bolt pickup at the side, grab the part on the tank with vise grip pliers as there will be a lot of torque to break the banjo bolt free. You don't want to create a leak where the fitting is attached to the tank.

Get the large 6 ton jack stands and get the back of the car as high as you can. It may also be at the limit of height of your jack, but it's possible to do because I do it all the time. Don't forget to disconnect the fuel tank sender at the top of the tank. There is an access panel below the rear window under the upholstered panel. Try to mark the two wires before you disconnect them. It may be easier to cut the big filler hose than try to disconnect it. You'll be replacing this anyway. There's also a smaller breather hose that will need to be disconnected.

As Kerry said, the exhaust will have to moved out of the way. It may be easier to drop the whole exhaust system in one piece by unbolting it from the y-pipe below the headers than trying to slide the pipes apart that have rusted in place.

Have fun!

I've been able to disconnect and reconnect those wires from the access panel in the trunk. Much easier than removing the rear seats that you have to in order to remove the package shelf.

It may be a little easier once the tank has been lowered a few inches.

Could somebody point out the best place for rear jack stands on the attached picture? I believe this is a four headlight car in the picture but the undercarriage looks identical to mine. I have read on this forum that the differential can be used as a jack point.

As I’m reading this, I realized the best place for the stands is probably where the lift arms are.

The metal where that pad is sitting will bend unless the pad or 2x4 is large enough to go across to each side.

I use the stubs that stick out of the chassis a little farther forward.
