tom´s front suspension blog

Post by 250gtgt »

Hello all,
I just read the new TY blog about the front suspension overhaul.

I just finished a 1960/61 SWB front suspension.

For the detail car nuts lovers here, it's maybe of interest, how they differ compared to a normal street 250GT(E). suspension.

the fist thing that is different are the top knuccles for foxation the Koni´s
they are "missing the cap" on top.

second :the sping holder are smaller in diameter ,to suit the 90 mm diameter and softer springs.
the space of the spring holder is closed by left and right a simple spacer,.

Is plating possible of the old grease nipples?

that they are still functional ?

Buying new would be probably easier.

thanks

nice weekend.

Hi Cornelis,

Thanks for the pictures.

I think if you plate the grease fittings, the little ball may get stuck inside.

Hi Cornelis. Thanks for sharing that with us. I can understand the less bulky parts, but what is with the kingpin cap?

About the suspension grease fittings, I got mine from Parker Hall and they were already nickel plated. Parker's business is now with Motion Products in Wisconsin. You may check with them for availability. However, I do not think plating your old ones would damage them. The Scaglietti door hinge pins have grease fittings that look like the suspension fittings, but are actually different. I could only get these in naked brass, so I had to have them nickel plated. Afterward, I tested the ball/spring valve of the fittings and they all worked as intended. I thought the spring might burn up in the acid bath, but it didn't.

Interesting.

We have the SWB setup with the "caps on the knuckles"... But different to a GTE part. Also, our spring cups have the same size, as the GTE, but the height is different.

John your S1 PF COUPE is also missing this" cap"
there is only a rubber bumper for the down movement (carlift)
for the max amplitude this is missing for this car no bumper on top.

This owner could not find org. lower susp arms. his own which where bent.

there are enough suppliers with aftermarket stuff on the market but CNC or cast iron.

These are good enough for roll on (PB) or drive around the church on a sunny day.

The org arms where forged iron made by a blacksmith which are much stronger. could save lives.

That the platers try to get a smooth surface on this arms is BS.

You must see the hammer bits.
