This weekend it was time to clear out the storage area at my house. In the process I was able to get at my exhaust system and take photos. I have a Stebro system on my car now, which is fine as it will always be behind the skid plate. This it the original system, which I am afraid is just scrap metal. No need to keep it any longer.

Here's picture of the forward section of an original exhaust for SN 2259

Instead of resonators, this one had a large muffler that I was told was found on other GTEs as well, but couldn't confirm.

this muffler was a different shape than the forward mufflers that were typical of the Abarth mufflers.

The rear mufflers have the same symmetrical shape as the front ones, but they they have structural gussets tack welded, which gives them an odd shape--as seen in Tom Y's photo. Tom W's rear mufflers were replaced with cherry bombs.

Hi John,

I'll have to see if I have more pictures of that rear muffler, because I think it was different in shape than the front cans, even without the gusseting.

I'm also working on a new blog post featuring what I think is a largely original exhaust on a SII 330GT 2+2. in this picture, the "cherry bomb" shaped resonators were also found on the rear section. The ones closest to the camera were replaced, but the other set look original.

Just like features on all of these cars, there were rolling changes from car to car, so not all of them had exactly the same exhausts, making exact reproductions challenging!

Hey Tom, that is very interesting. The Elena and PF coupe which were the previous models did not have back mufflers, so it's safe to say that back mufflers showed up with the GTE. It is also possible that they were a mid-production addition to the GTE. Maybe the customers complained about the droning and Ferrari added those "cherry bombs" as an interim solution. Then Abarth revised the design for the GTE to include the back mufflers. You got to love the archeology part of the hobby.

“ there were rolling changes from car to car”

Not to mention decades of maintenance that would not always have been done by Ferrari trained or even familiar mechanics.

When #4681 arrived in the garage 25 years ago it had been in Belgium, previously the USA and originally South Africa. The front twin mufflers were still present but there were no rear boxes and the pipe tails were not flared and angle cut, just chrome tips to the pipes (Boano or 250PF style). Additionally the exhaust system appeared to have received what I assume to have been ‘bushcraft’ repairs, with patches on patches of very non-standard metal.

Not being fortunate enough to have seen a full original system I’m grateful for all the above posts. Thanks to all.

So the 330 exhaust Tom posted on his latest blog does look similar to the one that was on my car. It does have the "cherry bombs" which indicates that was correct, at least for the later cars. I will have to check my car to see how far the skid plate goes, but it seems to me that it will cover up the majority of the exhaust, making most systems fine for daily driving. Not sure Classiche would see it that way however...
