Paint for Comodora Magnesium wheels

Post by 330GT »

I just ran across a Ferrari technical bulletin from 1971 which specifies the correct paint to be used in painting these wheels.

The text of the bulletin is on:

Kerry, thanks for that info - any idea how different the color and finish is from the paint code you recommended on your site? I did mine according to your color code and they look great - but im not sure what they were actually to look like due to most of my finish was worn off. One thing is that my painter (i think) used a little too much flattner, so they are little less than semi gloss finish. I would like a little more gloss.

I don't know how the color and finish would compare to what I used on my car. I had the paint off of my wheels for several years before repainting them. So I had no way of comparing.

I also can't find the source of the paint codes that I used. I seem to remember finding them in something like the FAF tuning techniques book. But I recently went through it and couldn't find anything. Perhaps some article in an old Prancing Horse?

paint for cromadora mag wheels

Post by Howard »

The Paint details quoted on Kerry's site by Ferrari Tech Assistance is dated 1971.
Anyone know if this is right for 330's ??
My observation is that 330's inc. gtc were a definite darker grey metalic,
then Daytona's (Cromadora now) where a little lighter, then boxers where a definite silver
probably in line with 308's

We just painted some 330 GTC wheels and it is quite tricky. First of all I had to buy some magnesium welding rod to fix some curb damage, then we spent hours stripping the wheels. PPG reps. state that you need a special primer for magnesium as it is very porous and it has to be applied IMMEDIATELY after bead blasting because contaminates can get into the casting in short order. We used this etching primer that was dark gray and built up quickly for sanding and smoothing. Next we used a very "white" aluminum paint with clear coat. I have seen many "Pebble" and "Cavillino" cars having the same finish with the very bright and super fine metallic and clear. Sorry I don't have details but I am at home and all the codes are at the shop.

One more thing about painting the alloy wheels.

Either don't strip/blast off the paint inside the rims or paint that area just like the outside. The castings are porous and will leak air from a tubeless tire unless they are painted on the inside.

I had mine cleaned/unpainted for several years. 3 of the 4 tires would lose air. Now that the insides are painted, all rims hold air.
