330 America #4973 for sale

Post by CarreraPanamericana »

Gentlemen,
This is the post we all dread. I tried to avoid selling my car, but I will not be able to keep it. Some of you will remember the car from last year. The car is very complete and is an awesome restoration candidate. It is complete and I have not touched the car, other than washing it for the first time in 30 years.
I am asking $35K for the car. It is in San Diego and available for inspection.
Here are some pics

If you are interested send me a PM or simply post and I'll email you back.
Thanks.

I think Tom is looking for a new project...

Is this the Alabama barn find car?

Sorry the project didn't work out.

Yup, That's the Deborah Wilson car from a year ago. I'm begging someone to rescue this car from being parted out!

I unfortunately don't have the funds to do it!

Tom
I have just seen your latest update 18th August.
Really well done & congratulations on getting it back on the road.
It looks fantastic
Can't believe that you are unwilling to make another 5 year commitment!!!! & I am sure all your fans & followers will be similarly disappointed.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the kind words!

I didn't say I wouldn't make another 5 year commitment, I just don't have the funds to do another one right now! I am taking offers, however, from someone who wants me to do their car! You'll even be able to track it's progress on the web!

I'm sure there are a few of us who would chip in a few weekends on a worthy project so tom wouldn't have to bare all the burden ;-P

I called Mrs Wilson right after you bought the auto and next I bought 5827 off the internet out of San Diego. Irony here. Please let me know how it goes with the sale. I would not at all mind another project. John from Alabama

John - I'm thinking about investing $35K into a 1970 Boss 302 (a car I've always wanted and puts one American muscle car in my stable). If you can sell the car to a good home, great -- as I need another 330 America like I need a hole in the head (and my wife's getting closer to giving me one).

However, just before getting desparate later in the year and parting it out, PM me and we can talk. If I get some additional business deals this Fall, I might be able to swing the car to restore it. It looks like a $50K-$60K restoration to me ($15K body/paint; $10K interior; $10K suspension/wheels; $20K motor/gearbox). This puts the car around $90K with your asking price. Is the car originally a red w/black interior car? Is the leather interior in good enough condition that with lots of conditioning/etc. it can be useable for daily driving or does it need to be completely pulled out of the car? (this could save some big bucks that could be applied elsewhere to bring the car back to proper mechanical condition).

Let us know

does that mean that I can have the fuse box cover and the passenger side headlight trim ring (I left the former in a rental car while restoring it)?
Or...will you restore it for some eccentric Euro billionaire?

I would be very hapy if you could report any internal engine numbers for 330 Americas. I'm missing numbers on both 4973 and 5061. It is interesting that the earliest 330 motors were included in the 250 numbering series, which also makes me particularly interested in these numbers!

Best wishes, Kare

Kare, 1720/62E is what has been reported to me for 4973.

Tom Shaughnessy told me that the 330 America engines are not 209 blocks, but instead a modification of the 250 block allowing for a larger cylinder sleeve. This would explain why the numbering is a continuation of the 250 series. The larger sleeve also left less room in the water jacket so America engines are more prone to overheating than the 209 types used in the 330 GTs.

When this 330 America originally "surfaced" in the barn in Alabama, I said it was destined to be a parts car. Its just hard to see any way that restoring it is not financial suicide. Not that plenty of folks dont sometimes do such things (me included).

I would guess restoring that car to the level of Tom's car would run $75K+ even if you did 90% of the work yourself. If you have to pay a professional shop to restore it.... $150K wouldnt surprise me.

Still, this one will let many others live on I imagine.

What sort of replica is the engine/trans and frame going to end up under?
