It's nice, but I'd rather have Tom's car.

Andy: I'm flattered.

$85K!? Is that what real nice examples are going for? I've better call my insurance agent and bump up the agreed value!

"Priced very right."
It says so right on the website!

(In fact all of Michael Sheehan's cars have similar statements.)

Hi Allan,

Buying a car that needs work, like paint, engine work, and interior for around $30-40K will have you spending $20K for the motor, $10K for the interior, and $10K for the paint. That does not include money for brakes, and other wear items that will probably need to be done. Add all this up and you have about $80K. I know people who have spent far more restoring these cars.

Some people like restoring the car themselves, so they know who did the engine work, and how the body was painted, but few people have the time or patience to take on such a project. This car looks pretty complete, but I would have to take a closer look to see what else it needs.

Is it worth $85K? At that price, everything had better be perfect because if it's not, you might as well spend that kind of money on a cheaper car doing everything right. If it is perfect in every way, then perhaps it is properly priced. Your negotiating skills can take it from there.

I have emailed back and forth with Sheehan about other cars and he's always been friendly and open. If I had questions about the car (or the price) I wouldn't hesitate to contact him.

I have actually called Hagerty and bumped up my agreed value. I guess the Lussos going from $140K to 240K dragged the 2+2s behind them somewhat.
I have seen 4 GTEs for sale in the last two months and took note of 2 auction sales. All the numbers were in the $55K-89K range.

This was posted elesewhere, but I think the selling prices are fairly realistic for GTEs:

no engine, or barn find $25-40K
3 condition (driver) car - $45-50K
2 condition - 50-60K
1 condition 60-75K

Add 10K for an America, 5K for a car located in Europe, or any special history.

Then again, it is my somewhat biased view, but still conservative considering the $85Kcar...I bet it will sell for close to that. If anybody knows the market, Sheehan is one of them.

I still have a love for these cars but wanted a little more power. So for the last three years I have completed two Shelby American cars. The first was the alum body CSX 4000 with the alum 427 motor. I soon had the Shelby bug and was able to talk them into selling me one of their existing CSX 7000 289 FIA cars. The 289 FIA has to be the best car I have ever owned. Even with the leaf spring suspension the sound of the webers at WOT is the best sound ever, I know you guys will not agree. I plan on a Ferrari project in the next five years if I can find a vintage track car.

Cheers,

Allan
