Horn Detailing
Re: Horn Detailing
I finally had a chance to install the horns and I hear only a click when I press the button. The horns work fine on the bench with a battery charger, so I am thinking the relay is weak. I tried to remove the horn relay (it is the original Fiamm with 3 screw connection lugs and 2 mounting screws), but it looks like there are nuts on the back of the fuse panel as I try to unscrew the mounting bolts, so it looks like I need to remove the fuse panel to access mounting nuts on the back.
Warning: Stupid questions ahead:
1) Do I really need to remove the fuse panel to get this relay off?
2) Is it easy to remove the fuse panel?
3) Is the Fiamm relay serviceable (does it have a removable cover so I can inspect/clean the internals)?

Re: Horn Detailing
Probably. You might be able to removethe screws, but then the nuts and washers would fall off the back.peterp wrote:Warning: Stupid questions ahead:

Fairly easy. Four nuts and washers on studs. Then pull it forward. There will be enough slack in the wiring to be able to access the nuts holding the relay on.peterp wrote:2) Is it easy to remove the fuse panel?
Yes, more than likely bad conacts that will just need some cleaning up with emery cloth or a nail board.peterp wrote:3) Is the Fiamm relay serviceable (does it have a removable cover so I can inspect/clean the internals)?
I would first jumper the relay to make sure that there is no problem with the horn or other wiring. The two terminals to jump are the H and B. This eliminates the relay contacts.

Re: Horn Detailing
Thanks Kerry, this is really helpful. My fuse panel has studs on the bottom, but screws with backing nuts on the top. The top screws like they would be difficult to get back on because it's hard to hold the nuts in place behind the panel. Knowing that it is supposed to also have studs on the top helps a lot -- I will replace the current bolt/nut setup with studs that will be correct and that will also make it a lot easier to reinstall the panel.
After I loosened the Fiamm relay mounting screws, I figured out that the relay cover can be removed while it still is mounted on the panel by just pulling the cover off (I still need to remove the fuse panel to retighten the relay mounting bolts however). I used Deoxit Gold (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=341-235) on the relay internals and the horns work perfectly now. The Deoxit is supposed to convert corrosion into a conductive surface rather than just clean it (which sounds like marketing hype, but I've found this stuff to work amazingly well on a variety of applications, so I tend believe it).

Re: Horn Detailing
I recently did a cosmetic restoration on my horns. Has anyone ever seen this 3 trumpet set-up? I guess I should have bench tested the compressor before reinstalling as I can't get her to work. Perhaps it is wired different for different countries or sound levels as their are 3 connectors not including ground?

Re: Horn Detailing
I was just at Gullwing Motors last week, and they had GTE 4043 for sale. I was looking at another car for a client, but took some pictures of this car and found horns similar to the three horn set up you TKO posted. Although these look like aftermarket replacements, they make a 1-2-3,1-2-3. sound when the horn was pressed instead of the usually chord of both horns firing the same time. Maybe this is a clue to how TKOs horns are supposed to work?

Re: Horn Detailing
Tom: I cannot say for sure how the horns in the photo work, but most of the three-horn setups had a switch that would change the horns from all three in unison to the sequential sounds. I had a set of Maserati air horns in the 1960s that did this. You mounted the switch under the dash and you could change the notes as required (amusing or "get out of the way").

Here is the description on the Marchal 3 horn system.
even not in france, you're lucky.
maybe this helps

Re: Horn Detailing
When Marchal came on the market with something new, you could find it 1-2 years later in the Fiamm catalog.
a kind of market/ countryprotection those days.
than we remember the japanese with there cameras 60-70th
take over by China then.
Now take over by the Americans ( Internetspionage) ( NSA).
but will never reach that quality we have here.
Yes bitt off topic but must be said now and then.

Re: Horn Detailing
The foto TY shows above at Gullwing GTE is NOT the Fiamm 3 horn fanfare but the Marchal 3 horn F33
Those chrome horns are correct.
For those who don´t see the difference,
ciao

Re: Horn Detailing
I'd like to another data point to the horn obsession. Attached are pictures of my apparently original blue horns from my GTC 11157, which was manufactured in early 1968, slightly overlapping 365 2+2 production so my car carries many small details that are also typical to those early cars. I cleaned off 47 years of road grime revealing what you see below.

Re: Horn Detailing
Hi All
I've followed this mammoth thread about FIAMM horns with great interest over the past few weeks as I have a number of sets. I have some questions to you very knowledgable guys so I joined the forum.
Does anyone recognise what the "piston" assembly, between the outlets, might be for on this is a recently purchased compressor?
One end has a connector that I presume should have a hose of some type, possibly lube? The opposite end has a collar held by a small grub screw onto a tapered pin that when moved in and out pushes a small button inside the compressor.
Anyone seen anything like this before please?
Thanks

Re: Horn Detailing
Hello. Can anyone confirm if the red hose has any lettering? I am referring to the 250GT series FIAMM horns. Thank you.
