Guys,
whats the correct finish for the Master cylinder ( for my late 330 GT SII, CAD plated booster)-- On Kerry's site there are examples of black painted and unfinished appearing ones.. Now that I have everything cleaned up, I might as well do it correctly.
Same for the bracket holding the reservoirs--- mine are painted black but I remember TY once stating they shouldn't be.

I have had several issues with them in the past 6 months - from taking forever, damaging my parts, ruining the plating - many excuses

Just an FYI and word of caution....Jeff is a great guy but something is going on IMO.....
Yup. I have to agree. Ron Karp is basically retired, and NOT doing brakes anymore. There is a vacuum (pun intended) in the brake rebuilding business.

According to my last communication with Ron, he sold the rebuilding portion of the business and now has a sleeving business located down the street and he does all the work himself, therefore no employees to make mistakes. That was probably 8 months ago. Bob Arthur #2693

When i did the MC on my GTC, as noted, I used Power Brake Exchange (Power Brake Exchange pwrbrake.com 408-292-1305 260 Phelan Avenue San Jose California 95112 ). Fast service, the booster works excellently and looked great on arrival. I was reluctant to use Karp as I wasn't convinced the guy I spoke with by phone knew sxxx from shinola and they were more $$. Except for some trouble getting a couple of the pistons out, I did the calipers on both of my other Ferraris, again, cost was a factor. . s

330GT brake fluid reservoir loss - Master Rebuild

Post by michaelbalk330 »

UPDATE:
1) got the 3 seals from T rutlands- fit great. pieces after cleaning look great.
2) Tom reminded me to make sure the Banjo bolt for rear brakes (labelled A) fits into the slot in the rear piston (labelled B)-- YOU MUST ALIGN the rear cylinder with slot pointing up as you assemble the pieces in the cylinder. Otherwise that long Banjo wont fit and you can damage it.
3) finished product
4) Note the Booster Vacuum seal looks an awful lot like the Bendix seal for a c3 corvette. waiting to confirm. I need this piece and the rear seal for the MC to finish the project. Does anyone have any sources to buy EPDM seals shaped like this?

Ron Recently sold his RK Sleeving business to a new owner. I'm working with Bruce to see how he makes out running this new business. He's a machinist by trade, and I hope he can succeed.

Re: 330GT Master cylinder repair Rear seal

Post by michaelbalk330 »

Follow up to my posts on the rear seal of my MC leaking. I sourced rebuild kits from 3 vendors ( because i destroyed 2 seals along the way). GT parts, Rutlands and finally Karps--- they all sell the same kit essentially, and while the 3 piston seals (7/8") are fine, the rear seal ( PN#7 in diagram) is too large at 1 1/8"+, and slightly thicker than what was in there. But the bore for the MC is 1".

It just doesnt fit. Even using a press, you cannot compress this into that area and still have the MC piston work smoothly. I destroyed 2 seals trying---- see the seal on the left. I called Jeff at Karps, and he basically told me i was wrong, but when I sent the seal back, with pics, he found a better 1.09" seal. I received it tuesday and installed and everything is working good now. Concurrently, Tom Y was trying to find seals and the bottom line is they just aren't available as a single item anywhere on a retail basis. I did find an alfa kit in europe for 45Euro that has same 7/8 piston seals and the larger rear seal (made by Quinton Hazell in UK).

I believe my MC for my late SII 330 is same as that for the 365GT and early dino--- per the diagram, and looking at a friends 365GT.

Bottom line-- I have plenty of new 7/8" piston seals if anyone is rebuilding a late 330GT, 365GT, or dino Master cylinder due to my difficulty in finding a seal, and wanting to get the car on the road. I even ordered another individual rear seal from rutlands and it was the larger one too. When you go to rebuild, pls ask your vendor to measure it and confirm it will fit in your bore. mine was 3/16 thick but the original was a softer rubber and more easily compressible.. the new ones are not.

IF YOU NEED pistons seals, let me know. Michael
