Rear hub seal

Post by tim »

Greetings... I just watched your video dealing with rear hub "seals" and thought I'd tell you what my 330 GT has. Shortly after I bought the car (40+ years ago) I needed to do the brakes. When I removed the knockoffs imagine my surprise to find a shop rag neatly folded and rolled up and stuffed inside the hub. There is no actual seal in the hub. Silly, thought I. When I put the hubs back on I just made sure everything was and tight. Of course it leaked. I still had the rags so in they went and no leak..No silicone-no leak. And for you "originality" fans, just remember There was no silicon sealer 61 years ago and by using a "modern" sealer, Tom has destroyed the value of his car. (giggeling as I write that)

Tim, the rag is probably not a good substitute for the three lines of defense Ferrari provided. The first LOD is a felt seal that acts as a baffle of sorts, so when the oil slushes around in cornering the oil doesn't slam against the lips seal. It does allow oil past it so the ball-bearing stays wet. The second LOD is the lip seal itself and the third one is sealant on the flanges. If all three are good and you are still leaking, then your shaft may be badly scored by the old lip seal.

The rag stops the leak where I used silicone sealer, but I think your lip seal is still there and functioning because if that seal failed, oil would be slinging out behind the disc!

My leak showed up on the outer part of the wheel. Oil migrated down the splines and then out where your did. There was nothing on the back side of the rotor.

Tim, if the splines are wet then the lip seal is passing oil.

Look the way the lip seal rides on the hub on the back of the brake disc. If the lip seal fails, oil would sling out BEHIND the brake disc onto the backside of the tire. If oil pushed through to the hub and wetting the splines, it's probably seeping past the axle behind the nut and washer as described in my blog post.
