REMOVING CAM COVER GASKETS

Post by Steve Meltzer »

Any hints or pearls of wisdom to help me remove the gaskets on the cam covers of my 330 GTC, as I proceed to set the lash? I really would like to preserve the paint on the covers and know that if I spray them with gasket remover they will have to be repainted. Methods short of that?
Thanks Steve

Steve: Razor Blades and lots of time. Then clean the gasket surfaces with lacquer thinner.

Steve, one more item that needs to be watched when removing the covers; the square gasket against the chain cover. Remove the cam cover first and observe the chain cover gasket when lifting the cam cover to be sure that gasket does not stick to the cover and rip. If that square chain cover gasket tears, repairing it is very difficult. When installing the cam cover, lube the chain cover gasket and use a thin shim against it.

Jim, Thank you so much. The square cut gaskets on both sides look great and I will be very careful to keep them that way! Thanks again for your advice.

Thanks for the tip about using the razor blades. I was using a putty knife: not the way to go.

Do you guys put silicone on both sides of the gasket?

Thanks again, Steve

Since Dyke recommended it to me I use Loctite 518 nearly for everything! Its so versatile and really holds what it promises.

Chris, Do you put the 518 on the gasket surfaces and if so, do you dress both sides? I thought the 518 was for metal to metal and not as a gasket dressing. I have used it on a number of occasions, but would not have thought of using it here. Thanks, Steve.

Steve: Yes, both surfaces. It works wonderfully as a gasket sealer. Best thing since chocolate milk and sliced bread!

Steve, Sorry for the late answer: Just as Dyke wrote. Both sides and really works well!
