A DIFFERENT CLUTCH QUESTION

Post by Steve Meltzer »

When I went to bleed the clutch on my 330 GTC, I noted that the fluid in the reservoir was blackish. I drained the reservoir completely, filled it with new brake fluid, drained it again and did it one more time for good measure. Then, I replaced the slave cylinder, thinking that the problem was a deterioration of one of the rubber seals within the slave. When I put it back together, all the fluid was clear but after driving, the car is now blackish again. I was told that the problem is a reaction to the aluminum in the master cylinder, though after 20+ years of ownership, I've never seen this before. The car’s clutch was working perfectly fine before I bled it and replaced the slave, and it continues to operate perfectly fine, though that fluid looks nasty. Your thoughts? Thanks, Steve.

I thought about that, but it seemed like it wasn't that long ago that I replaced that hose....WRONG! It was 13 years ago, so I'll replace it and report back. Time goes by when you're having fun. Thanks again, Steve.

I replaced all the parts in the hydraulic clutch system of my 330 GTC and it all appears nice and clean, and ready to go. Not certain what the original cause was, but this should solve it with the classic Meltzer "shotgun" approach. Thanks, Steve.
