Post by enio45 »

Need to swap out my plugs and wanted to get a recommendation from the group here -

Tom, you always are doing alot of tune up related - what are you using?

Also recommendation for spark plug wires - what MM is recommended and where to get a spool??

Thanks in advance for the recommendation

I have used NGK plugs for many years and like them. Check the charts in your owners manual or shop manual, .025 as I recall.

Thank u jimmy- kinda what I was thinking

Have a spool of 7mm Petronius black wire that we used on the Ellen - I think it’s acceptable for 330 motor

Thoughts on this ?

If you are not running an electronic ignition the solid conductor plug wires are much more resistant to damage when checking or replacing plugs. The pulling on those carbon string wires often open up if not handled gently. Also, the solid conductor wires ca be soldered to the terminals and provide a rugged system. I soldered all my connectors on my race cars and never had a problem even when yanking them around when in a hurry. Jim

So, just to be clear (and as a reference for others in the future), what is the the NGK plug type for the Columbo tipo 209 V12? And the recommended gap? I would believe these numbers to be common across the engine type...

I use NGK as well BP6ES is what I used, but they no longer make non resistor plugs part #7333. They all have resistors. Some people run a 7 heat range, but I have found the hotter plug helps prevent fouling, but most people run either 6s or 7s with NGK. Other plug manufacturers list heat ranges differently.

I gap to .65mm, so .6 gauge will easily pass, and .7 will not.

7mm solid core wire if you're not running electronic ignition.

I just put new plugs in my 330 GTC. Most of the pros from Dover seem to recommend NGK and I have long run BP5ES plugs gapped at .028 " which is about what Tom uses as well. Remember that with NGK plugs the lower the number the hotter the plug and I run a hot plug to prevent fouling because I don't get long distance runs in the car, nor is it driven in a race situation. I also always lightly coat the threads with copper anti-seize. <G>
